          In the beginning, the story starts with the introduction of St, Clouds, a hospital of an orphanage during the 192_ in Maine. The town that the orphanage is in is much more of a logging camp. There is also the Rames paper company which has workers cut down trees and is destroyed for paper, and there is a long down Stream River which the logs are thrown to travel by. We are also introduced to the characters Dr. Larch, head of the orphanage, two nurses, Angela and Edna, and the protagonist, Homer Wells, who was born at St. Clouds.

          So far in the book, we learn about the characteristics of Dr. Larch and Homer Wells, Homer Wells I found very interesting. Dr. Larch is a old man, who has a thought on almost anything, he hates the Rames paper company for killing the forests, loves the children of St. Clouds and teaches/guides them as they grow up about the real world until they are adopted. He has many rules and goals for the children which they must follow and most importantly Dr. Larch is very well mannered and behaved, he takes many notes of Homer, St. Clouds and anything else that comes to his mind. Homer Wells, is a bit odd, for when he was born, he did not cry, at all, so when he was adopted (three times before, but all parents failed) they always tried to make him cry, even by hurting him. He also is a bit unique in skills, for his age (at the moment he’s 12) has has read the book Great Expectations twice, which is a hard and very long book. He also shows few signs of emotion, and shows it only when he is happy or to make others happy. In the end, Homer Wells is still not adopted because no family can really raise him, so Dr. Larch gives up and has Homer Well live in St. Clouds.
