One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest By Ken Kesey

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest takes place in the 1960’s in a mental hospital. It tells the sad tales of a mental institution and its patients, it is quite a sad place. But when a new mischievous patient is brought in, the hospital world begins to lighten up and opportunities open up.
The main character and narrator; Chief Bromden tells the story of the everyday life living in a hospital, but mainly Randle Patrick McMurphy. R. P. McMurphy was a gambler. McMurphy was loud, obnoxious and a bit full of himself, he had red hair and was broad, big, and tall. He faked insanity and began to smuggle all sorts of things into the institution, he had introduced rebellion and fun.
Now there were two classes the patients could be classified as, you were either an acute, or a chronic. An acute is someone who goes to a mental hospital for minor issues, and is treated then can go all in a short amount of time. The more unlucky ones, were known as the chronics, someone who has severe or permanent issues, someone who basically has no hope and will almost surely die in the hospital. The chronics stay longer and suffer until they can’t live anymore; they’re there for life. Which brings us to our main character, “Chief” Bromden.
Bromden stood six foot seven inches. He had been there since the end of WWII, but he was perfectly fine. Chief Brodmen faked being deaf and “mute.” After the humiliation of his father by the government, Brodmen began to hallucinate and claimed society was ran by a giant machine called “the Combine.” He turned into the hospital’s janitor and was ordered to sweep the institution by no other then the head nurse, Nurse Ratched.
Nurse Ratched was a tyrant figure, she was mean, big, and wouldn’t hesitate to restrict medication from the patients. She took total control and always relied on Billy Bibbit. Billy Bibbit was one of the acutes; he was a scrawny boy with strong speech problems and had depression. Billy attempted to commit suicide several times and had cut himself frequently, he always kissed up to Nurse Ratched and told her anything she needed to know, he told her who was causing trouble, anything that she asked of him, he’d do it. Some other acutes are Martini, Dale Harding George Sorensen and Max Tabar. Coming up we find more about Randle McMurphy and his mischievous ways as he plans to bring in more chaos to the institution, what will Nurse Ratched do? We will find out next.
