Tess of the d’Urbervilles

Summary part one
“Tess of the d’Urbervilles” is a story that depicts the life of a woman growing up in the nineteenth century. Tess, the protagonist, grew up in England as part of a lower class family. She was the eldest sister and had many siblings. Her mother stayed and worked at home taking care of the house and children. Tess’s father worked as a farmer in the fields. Their family name was Durbeyfield. Soon the family found out they could be distant cousins of the wealthy d’Urberville family. When Tess is venturing out one night she accidently kills the horse that is very valuable to her family. Because of this she feels the need to find work and pay for the damage she has done. Tess makes her way to the Durbeyfield estate in search of work and money. While with her cousins she meets a man named Alec. Alec is a distant cousin of hers. He helps her find work in the estate and soon falls in love with her. Tess doesn’t share mutual feelings with Alec but, he won’t take no for an answer and takes advantage of her. Soon after this incident Tess leaves the estate and returns home. While back at home, Tess discovers she’s pregnant. This isn’t a good thing because in the Victorian society you are automatically married to a man once you have his child. Despite the bad conditions Tess has the baby. She takes care of it and works as a farmer in the fields to help provide for her family. She has come to love her child even though he was an outcome of a tragedy. Sadly, Tess’s baby becomes sick and soon dies. Tess is ashamed and decides to once again venture out into the country and find work to support herself. She ends up working on dairy farm. Here she makes many friends. She also met a man named Angel here. They fall in love and want to get married.
This is as far as ive gotten in this novel. So far I really enjoy it and cant wait to continue reading it.
