Madame Bovary

The novel, Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert has a lot of complicated ideas and so far it’s just the beginning of it all. In the beginning of the novel we follow Charles Bovary to his first day of school and with his family. We then follow him through life and from college to college to his first wife, and to their home where Charles is a doctor. He travels around to people in help. One night when someone got a fractured there leg he came and while there met the patient’s daughter Emma. Charles comes often after this to check up on his leg but stays much later to talk to Emma. They fall in love and all this time his first wife is at home. She starts to suspect something and wants him to not go over any more. She becomes sick and the bank takes all her money that she lied to Charles about and she dies soon after. After her death Charles sees Emma more often and they decide to get married but they have to wait a while so Charles will seem to be getting over his mourn.  A while after their marriage Emma does not receive what she expected. She was hoping for what she reads in the books, a passionate and loving marriage but she becomes bored. Charles was happier than her. One of Charles’ patients invites them to a ball when he realizes that she is not a country type girl and she is beautiful and sophisticated enough that he decides to invite them. When they get there Emma is amazed by the ball but embarrassed by her husband who she feels does not fit in. This is where I have been able to read up to and I am looking forward to reading more.
