Jude the Obscure

So far in Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy, Jude's marriage to Arabella ends.  Before Jude met Arabella, he had dreams of attending a university in Christminster.  Jude's ambition to go to Christminster was inspired by his schoolmaster, Richard Pilloston, who left Marygreen and went to Christminster.  However, before he is able to move to Christminster, Jude meets Arabella and the two marry.  When the marriage failed, Arabella decides to leave with her parents to Australia.  After Arabella leaves, Jude finds a painting of himself in a shop.  It was a wedding gift that was given to Arabella.  When he sees this, he buys the portrait and brings it home.  Once he gets home, he starts a fire and burns the painting, frame and all.  Then, Jude moves to Christminster.  This is important to the story because I think it symbolizes Jude's moving forward with his life to fulfill his dream.
